What constructs are
Constructs are the little buddies — that is how a player described them directly in the Yellow Gumball thread when someone asked.
Yellow Gumballs unlock the last three
The connection between the two:
"You need them to unlock the last 3 constructs currently in game."
Note currently in game — the number is a snapshot of what has shipped, not a permanent total.
Where Yellow Gumballs come from

So they are not exclusively a deep-layer item, but the reliable source is the Clown encounter below depth 10, where one is guaranteed on the podium.
The Clown is a separate boss
The Clown is described as findable and fightable below depth 10, distinct from the Corrupted Elite portal encounter.
⚠️ Weapons break in these fights. One player in the thread found a Gumball at level 5 and still lost the boss fight because their weapons broke.

- What each construct actually does. "Little buddies" tells us they are companions of some kind; no source describes their individual abilities
- How many constructs exist in total
- Whether Gumball rarity tiers beyond "legendary" exist
- The exact drop rate at round 7 versus deeper
- Whether constructs are permanent unlocks or per-run
